The expectation for each child is that they are being read to every single day for a minimum of fifteen minutes. We want children to LOVE to read! Being read to is an excellent opportunity to talk together and to build a strong foundation as a life long reader. While you are reading stop and ask your child questions a long the way. Asking questions regarding the text or illustrations help children learn strategies to comprehend what is being read. You will begin to notice, as the school year progress, you child wanting to read words along the way. Encourage the! Eventually, the roles will change; your child will read to you and you will be the active listener ! What a magical day!
Below are some suggestions of questions you can ask your child:
1. What did this book make you think about in your own life?
2. What did this book make you think about in the outside world?
3. Which other books does this remind you of? Why?
4. How does the main character feel in this book? Have you ever felt
that way? When?
5. What didn't make sense to you in this book ?
6. What do you think the author is trying to say or teach?
7. Is this an author you would like to read more from? Why?
8. Which words were hard to read in this book? How will you remember
them for next time?
9. Which strategies did you use as a reader tonight? How did this
help you?
10. How did this book touch your heart?
11. Can you summarize this story in your own words?
12. Who is the main character? Tell about him/her/it.
13. What is the setting (time and place of this story?)How do you
know? What evidence in the book helps you make your decision?
14. Based on the cover of this story only, what might you expect this
story to be about?
15. What is the main problem in this story? How does the author solve
the problem?
16. Tell about the most interesting/funny/scary part of this book.
